Danger, Danger

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Wow, fabric & craft stores are so dangerous. I only went in for some beads, and maybe some thread, and maybe a needle, and maybe some tape, and maybe a sewing kit….hmm, I think I see my problem.

I also picked up a puzzle (don’t ask me why they had a jigsaw puzzle, I don’t know). The pens were also a bonus (fabric markers). I probably didn’t need to get the amethyst beads, but I might use them. This weekend, even.

I’m still prepping for the con this weekend. I’m getting nervous. I have to be packed tonight.

Played Living Greyhawk Friday night. It went pretty well. Saturday ..I did something Saturday. Oh right, my Mom came for a visit. We hit the thrift shop, craft shop and generally had fun. She had to leave early to avoid threatening weather.

Saturday night, my friends took me out for sushi. It was sooo good. We had a great time. John gave me Hallowed Hunt by Bujold. I didn’t even know it was out yet. He also gave me a book on Celtic metaphysics. Cool.

Chris gave me a cool book on Manga drawing. It’s really good, includes anatomy, perspective & shadows. Rosemary gave me the Bowling for Soup cd (double cd, with 1 side a dvd w/ the music videos for Almost & 1985). Way cool.

Sunday was pretty much a bust. Joe had been emailing the probable gm. However, the gm was moving. What are the odds that the gm would have his computer set up & plugged in the 1st weekend he’s moved? Not good. So we all ended up waiting around doing nada. But Chris took Rosemary & I out to supper at Montana Ted’s. Then I spent too much money at the bookstore. Again. Hey, I ended up buying D&D for Dummies.

Almost rainy Saturday afternoon

Saturday, May 28th, 2005

Mom came to visit me today, but she left early to avoid the possible thunderstorms headed our way. We did a little shopping. I now have thread to fix Joe’s backpack (the seam popped), and to fix my blouse.  Plus, I found a laptop bag at the Goodwill store. We had sort of hoped to go see my cousin Nathan (mom’s great-nephew, out of her sister Carol) play basketball. He’s at a high school Tournament of Champions. But the game was at 2 pm & I’m not 100% certain how to find the venue. I just don’t go to Duke campus often enough to feel comfortable finding it, much less a specific building on it.

I really need to clean up the living room some. Of course, I also need to go through my clothes to weed out what I don’t wear, duplicates, etc. That would help as it would give my space in my room.

Short entry today. I’m off to take a nap before people show up.

Friday before a 3-day weekend is sooo long

Friday, May 27th, 2005

It was fun talking to my Dad & stepmom last night. We ganged up on Dad a little. But it was all in good fun & he can dish it out as well as take it. The food was pretty good. We went to the Cracker Barrel about 20 miles closer to me. That meant, that despite everything, I still arrived before they did. I managed to find, select & re-save some photos I thought that Dad would like. Then after supper, I burned them onto a cd.

They gave me three scarves that step-mom K knitted herself, using those neat, new, kinda fuzzy yarns. They are really pretty. It almost makes me wish the weather was cold enough for me to wear them.

I was going to wear a skirt today, my black gauze one with the handkerchief hem, and was ironing a purple silk blouse to wear. Unfortunately, while ironing the blouse I found that the underarm seam on one side was giving way. So instead, I’m wearing black cotton twill pants with a violet/lilac polo shirt (Carolina Renaissance Festival). I’m still wearing the black loafers. I’m also wearing my amethyst ring, amethyst pendant & purple czech bead earrings. Plus, I have on 2 silver rings & my constant ~hematite ring. I have the pendant on a very short silver chain, so it actually shows in the collar. I need to polish this chain though, it’s a little tarnished.

Yesterday I wore a pale grey (Dendarii) polo with a black and white printed gauze skirt. This with the silver band I got from Mom, a band of red stone, Celtic anthromorph knot pendant, Celtic knot ring, & Celtic knot earrings.

I’ve added 2 more cd’s to my collection of music on my laptop. Next time I sync up my mini-iPod, I’ll have more songs to listen to.

I had to reconnect to the local wireless network. It’s firewalled so I have to go through quite a bit to get onto it. I don’t know how I lost my settings. But that’s why I only have 2 cd’s. Typing in all the titles is a pain.

Geneaology update: Dad found paternal g-grandfather’s marriage license. So now I know that g-grandmother’s maiden name is Boring. Literally, her name was Boring. With that, plus the date & location of the marriage, I can try to trace her family a bit better. Anecdotally, she’s supposedly from a foster home or an orphanage. Hopefully, I’ll find something to confirm or deny that. Even if it’s true, I may be able to find her family. Let’s cross our fingers & hope the census records are helpful.

Happy Birthday to me (belated)

I had a follow-up doctor’s appointment yesterday morning. I had an infection on my hand & in between the time that I made the appointment & the actuall appointment, it showed signs of having gone blood-born. Bad thing. So the doctor gave me some anti-biotics & some cream to allay the itching and told me to come back in 3 weeks. Yesterday was 3 weeks. I now have a faintly pink patch on my hand & a darker one on my calf. That’s it. Those are the only signs of the infection.

I got out of the appointment & headed home, realized that I didn’t really want to go to work. So I called my boss, told him what I had on deck (one email) that had a time limit & asked for the day off. He agreed. Yay! So I spent the day futzing with my laptop & watching tv. It was great. Plus I took a desparately needed nap.

My boyfriend gave me 2 sets of jade chopsticks with jade rests. Oooh, pretty green jade. Rosemary sent me a card. It was a funny one about my age.

Chris brought home Bojangles for supper & we went to C’s & A’s house for our bi-weekly D&D/C&S hybrid game. We were going to be fighting >20 werewolves. We had 3 silver weapons between us, plus the druid & the wizard. There turned out to be 32 of the things. But we had set up well & wiped out all but @ 6 of them. Two ran away early in the fight (I got a couple crits with my arrows & even if they weren’t silver, I’m sure that they hurt). We were down to the last half-dozen and 5 of them fled. We caught two of them but at least another 2 escaped. C said that 6 in all escaped. We got 2 of the leaders but the escapees mean that they can report on our tactics & abilities. Not a good thing when we’re trying to get rid of all the werewolves in the country.

Odd/disturbing note: apparently there was a cross-burning in the neighborhood where we were last night. It’s very odd. I don’t recall a cross-burning anywhere nearby, well, in my lifetime. And this was a fairly upscale neighborhood, too. I really don’t understand that sort of thing.

Tonight I drive about 30 minutes to meet my Dad & step-mom for supper. We’ll eat at a Cracker Barrel, and talk for a couple hours. I have to run home & get my niece’s birthday (March) presents. I forgot to put them in the car again this morning. On the bright side, maybe they’re better off not being in a hot car all day.

I can’t decide if I want sushi or crab legs for my birthday supper on Saturday. It’s been a traditional since we were all poor, just out of college, people. The birthday person chooses a restaurant & everyone else treats him/her to supper.

Tuesday I played Spycraft. Good game, but it didn’t end ’til almost midnight. Then I couldn’t get to sleep until almost 2 am. Bleah. No wonder I was so tired yesterday.

Tomorrow, instead of our Buffy game, we’ll be playing Living Greyhawk (RPGA). I can’t remember what game, what character, etc. I hope I find out soon.

Mom’s coming by on Saturday. I’ll have a chance to go through more clothes. Yay me. Sunday is Forgotten Realms & then Monday we’re, theoretically, playing another LG game & possibly Albedo that evening.

I still have to pack & think about what I’m taking to the tatting convention next weekend. I have to check my class list and see what supplies I need. I think it would be better to bring my own than to wait, buy, & have to find a way to bring it home.

I feel like a Bowling for Soup album

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Okay, Friday night we (Chris, Rosemary & I) went to Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. We agreed that Lucas did a good job with tying up loose ends and with ‘foreshadowing’. That whole Annakin going to the Dark Side was very well-handled. The Wookie army and the deaths of the Jedi were well-done too (how did Yoda & Kenobi survive? Now we know).

We recognized some of the scenes from Chris’s Star Wars video game (clone wars). That was amusing.

We went to the 10:30 pm show at an out of the way theater. As a result, there were maybe 50 people in the room. Including two jerks with open cell-phones. One of them was text messaging & playing games in the middle of the movie. Do you know how hard it is to concentrate on a movie with a lit up cell phone screen in your line of sight (ie in the seat in front of me with stadium seating)? Gave Chris a headache. Somebody hissed, "Put up the <expletive deleted> phone." I don’t know if it was to him or to the other guy (off to the left & farther down). Either way, at least he put it up halfway through the movie.

On the way home, we were ‘caught’ in a DWI checkpoint. By caught, I mean stopped, license & registration checked & then released. But it was a mild delay. Since we’d been passed by an ambulance just a couple minutes earlier, when we first saw all the flashing lights our first thought was ‘OMG, how bad is this accident & how are we going to get around it’. The DWI checkpoint was a relief, really.

2 am before we got home. I was sooo tired. Then up the next morning to prep for my mom’s arrival. She woke up late too so didn’t arrive until almost noon. Bit of a relief really. Chris worked on cleaning up his room while I tried on clothes. I got rid of things that didn’t flatter, didn’t fit (except a for a few things for if/when I lose a little weight), etc. Mom & I repaired a few items, help extend their wear-time. Mostly it was small stuff; move a button, reinforce a popped seam, remove shoulder pads, etc. Now I need to go through my turtlenecks & weed out the egregious duplicates.

Mom left about 6 pm, after a trip to the thrift shop. I bought a couple books but resisted the teapot with matching cup & saucer. I did get about 4 vests & 2 skirts. *sigh* Still, it’s less than usual. That’s a good thing, right?

I woke up at 5 something am with a headache on Sunday morning. It never really went away until late that night. I did some work, loaded my family tree software (that I’ve been holding for 5 years, waiting for a computer with a cd drive that’s windows based) onto my laptop. I started on that a little. I also loaded some of my cd’s onto my iTunes & onto my mini iPod.

I checked some on-line stuff on the laptop, while watching the Bachelor & the Bobby Soxer (I really don’t know why that was Shirley Temple’s last movie, she was cute) and doing some laundry. I still need to put the load of darks into the dryer.

Joe came over & we went out to brunch at Pizza Inn. It’s 30 minutes away & the last one (of 6) in the tri-city area. After that, it was off to the game shop. Joe’s roommate owns it, so he usually shops from home so to speak. I can’t buy anything because my birthday’s coming up. We might end up taking someone else with us to Origins. Chris was talking to John B about it.

At Rosemary’s after that, we watched the episodes of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that she had taped. It was a Usagi Yojimbo crossover (a little, at least). When Diana & Chris C arrived, we made up our UY playtest characters. Poor Chris C started feeling poorly so he went home. We played a single 2-part combat after making up our characters. The first part was against mooks. Then we fought the 2 big bosses. As questions/concerns came up, Diana wrote them down to ask the game designer.

We ordered supper from Steak Out (a pretty good take-out/delivery burger/steak/chicken place) and ate during the battle. After the game, we did a whole review thing; biggest issue thing, etc. And my stomach/digestion started feeling poorly. I ended up spending about an hour (or so) in Rosemary’s bathroom. Then, when I finally emerged & packed my bag (game notebook, dice, etc), I had to go back. Rosemary was wanting to go to bed & her contacts stuff was in the bathroom that I was in. So she was pissy. That pissed me off because I was stressing over whether or not I was going to throw up.

We left and when we got home I immediately went & spent another hour in the bathroom. I tried to pick up a few things but it was getting close to midnight & I was tired. I got ready for bed & then went & spent another 40 minutes in the bathroom. Finally I got to bed & to sleep about 1 am. I thought long & hard about getting up & calling in late to work (so I could sleep late) before going to sleep.

I made it in on time anyway. But I am so tired. I didn’t have time for a real breakfast so I ate a breakfast bar. Then suddenly my stomach twinged again. I alerted my supervisor. I might not have to leave. But I don’t want to spend a few hours in the bathrooms at work. I’d rather be home if I’m going to feel like that. Maybe I’ll be fine. I haven’t twinged in an hour. We’ll see.

Blood loss & lack of sleep

Friday, May 20th, 2005

Okay, between going to pick up (buying) my new laptop YAY Wednesday night & gaming last night, I have not had enough sleep the past couple nights. Thank goodness for caffeine.

So I charged my laptop Wednesday night & starting doing set up during lunch yesterday. I’m trying to do stuff with my new iPod, too. It’s not quite as easy as I thought it would be. But I’m slogging through it.

Yesterday I went to make a pherisis donation (platelets) but it took longer than I expected. The half-hour it took for them to find my veins had something to do with that. As a result I was late for Mutants & Masterminds last night. And I made D late (she was giving me a ride). But her giving me a lift meant that I didn’t have to drive home & I napped in the carride home. When I came in wearing 3 bandages, I did get a lot of sympathy. It’s mildly sad though, I couldn’t carry my own backpack for 5 hours (no heavy lifting).

Gaming ran late, we were in the middle of a battle & wanted to reach a good stopping point (down to one bad guy, tho 2 of us were unconscious - but if it hadn’t been so late, we could have used Hero Points & stayed awake at least). Now, hopefully, we’re back on our regular every other week gaming schedule.

I still haven’t done laundry. So, it’s another skirt today. Yesterday I found a pair of slacks in the laundry room & wore those, not remembering why I hadn’t put them in my closet. They have a pinhole in one leg that I need to repair. Oops.

Tomorrow my Mom’s coming for a visit. I need to tell her not to bring me anything. I want her to help me go through all of my clothes. Put up my winter things, pile up stuff that’s not flattering or doesn’t fit to go to Goodwill or the Battered Women’s shelter, and make repairs. That will help me clean up my room & my closet. I hope.

time to do laundry

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

Today I had to wear a skirt because all my slacks are dirty. I still have blouses (mostly polos) & one or two bras, but from the waist down I’m limited to skirts. That unfortunately means I need to shave my legs & find my bicycle shorts. I’m heavy enough that going bare-legged under skirts is a bad idea (chaffing). In the winter, I wear leggings & long skirts with boots. It’s getting too warm for that option. I can still wear the longer skirts but the shorts are a necessity. Plus, some of my cotton gauze skirts are too filmy for me to be comfortable without wearing something underneath.

I weigh 188.5, almost back up at where I was when I decided to lose weight. Weigthwatchers worked for awhile but then I just got sick of it. I did lose 25# but I didn’t keep it off. I know that I have bad eating habits, but I’m working on them. Taking the bus & walking to & from the bus stop helps too.

Tonight, I’m going shopping for a laptop. I need to transfer the money into my checking account so that if I find a good deal I can go ahead & pay for it. I’ve looked at some on-line, now I just need to do a bit more shopping. Wish me luck.

8 days of gaming

Monday, May 16th, 2005

Whew, it’s almost over. I’ve gamed every day since last Monday.

Monday 5/9: D&D Pirate Hunter game (fight the evil cultists, find way to restore universe)

Tuesday 5/10: Living Spycraft (stop the evil smugglers)

Wednesday 5/11: C&S/D&D hybrid (stop the authorities from blaming us/catching the pagan rebels in our midst)

Thursday 5/12: Mutants & Masterminds (stop the Crime League from stealing tech from Astro Labs)

Friday 5/13: Buffy (try to stop laughing long enough to actually run the game)

Saturday 5/14: Living Greyhawk D&D (drive 3+ hours, wait til morning game’s over, playtest Patriot Games Battle Interactive, comment, stay overnight ’cause it’s so frigging late when we get done…but it was fun)

Sunday 5/15: Forgotten Realms (after driving back, cleaning off the table, showering & eating lunch)

Tonight: Albedo (I think we’re fighting the rabbits)

My life is full of gaming. This week, it’s just tonight & Thursday (thank goodness).

I did almost finish the snood for my Aunt Dot. I would have finished, but I ran out of thread. 8-{

Time to leave my computer.

Hopefully I will have a laptop soon. That means that I can post updates from home, too.

A new start

Friday, May 13th, 2005

Okay, I’ve tried blogging before. But there was a problem & I couldn’t get it to post my entries anymore. So I gave it up.

Now I’m going to try it again. Wish me luck.

This week has been hectic. As of Monday, I will have played a roleplaying game every night for 8 nights. Monday: my bf’s D&D campaign, Tuesday: RPGA Living Spycraft, Wednesday: D&D/C&S hybrid game, Thursday: Mutants & Masterminds game, Friday (tonight): my Buffy game, Saturday: drive to Virginia for some RPGA Living Greyhawk, Sunday: Forgotten Realms & Monday: Albedo. In addition, I’m in some on-line games at RPOL.net.

Luckily work has slowed down…a little.  Nonetheless, I’m a girl who needs her sleep & I’ve been short on it since…um, Thursday…of last week.
